Impatient

“But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless. And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation” (2 Peter 3:13-15a).
With the promise of a new heaven and earth it’s easy to become impatient. If salvation has been won and eternal life has been promised then what am I still doing here? I’ve asked the question myself and until tonight I’ve never gotten an answer. “Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.”
The Lord does not tarry. He hasn’t forgotten us. He isn’t distracted by something else and overlooking His promise. He is patient. “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
If He called it quits now and took us all home the new heaven and earth might still be a lonely place. Instead He intends to fill it with the greatest gathering of partygoers the whole of creation has ever seen. Let us not be impatient with the fulfillment of His promises but rather let us look forward to the great gathering the Lord is saving!
